Love is Not Enough to Sustain a Successful Relationship

Falling in love is one of the most wonderful feelings in the world.

Being in love can often sustain a relationship in its early stages, even in the face of apparent differences between you and your partner, personal difficulties, and even what might otherwise be significant relationship obstacles.

But love alone is seldom enough to sustain a successful relationship. Because even when love manages to stay strong, relationships face challenges that love alone won't be sufficient to meet.

This is no secret, but it's always good to be reminded.

If you want to have an enduring relationship…

Learn and practice reflective listening - a simple communication tool that helps you to really "hear" what your partner is saying and demonstrate that his/her communications really matter to you.

Learn simple exercises for connecting with each other on as many levels as possible, including "soul gazing" and synchronized breathing, as presented in the Making Love Simply Divine blog posts on June 10th and 12th, 2008.

Make a commitment to ongoing learning, individually and together.

Be constantly on the lookout for new ideas about how to strengthen the bonds of your relationship and keep the romance alive.

Be aware of your beliefs and how they are contributing to or deterring your relationship from growing. Let go of any beliefs that aren't helping to improve your relationship in favor of new beliefs that do.

Love can provide a strong foundation for a relationship that can last a lifetime. When you don't count on it, alone, however, you provide yourself the opportunity to have not just a good relationship, but a great one - one that is constantly growing and deepening.
